Milwaukee Madness II – Little Friends

Milwaukee Madness II – Little Friends

The Little Friends of Printmaking are a Midwest screen printing force to be reckoned with.  The husband-and-wife team (James and Melissa) came onto the poster scene gunz blazing in early 2003 and have been slingin’ ink and illustration ever since.  As you can see from the pictures they’ve managed to simultaneously build impressive lists of clients and vinyl toys.  During our Milwaukee stay James let us pick his brain on education and business for an afternoon and we’re better off for it.  Many thanks, James!

For more on Little Friends (and an informal BA in illustration) point your happy little clicker to their Flickr.

Milwaukee Madness – Heavy Tees

Milwaukee Madness – Heavy Tees

The other weekend Jenna and I trekked across four states in four hours to visit the birthplace of a hefty portion of American culture.  That’s right, Milwaukee; home of Miller Beer, Harley-Davidson and SummerFest.  It also happens to be home to Heavy Rotation Tees, something I actually enjoy being in close proximity to after an extended period of time.  Heavy Tees first caught my eye at a little boutique in Grand Haven with their illustrations, color, creamy soft tees and a super soft hand.  Instantly intrigued.  Brian, the owner / designer / screen-printer extraordinaire, was super kind and took time out of his day to give us a tour and share some stories.  The whole experience was an eye opener.  Many thanks, Brian, for giving us a taste of your knowledge and processes.

Thursday’s are always good…especially when you get to peek inside the worlds of artists and makers who intrigue you.  This past Thursday we ventured into the worlds of Joel E. S. Tanis and Anne Pageau via their shared studio in the Midtown Center for a conversation on the joys and struggles of making a living by making things you believe in.  I’m super greatful for their willingness to share their stories, early work, processes and expertise in all areas bizniss.  :)

For those of you that went I’d love to hear what you learned from talking with them. For those of you that didn’t you can live vicariously through more pictures of the outing here.

Graphic Design Workshop

Graphic Design Workshop

This past Thursday marked the beginning of a series of on location workshops hosted by leaders in the West Michigan creative industry.  After school on Thursday we took off to Grand Rapids for a hands on workshop with Mighty and Visualhero.  After a little warm up we shared stories and walked through their design processes as it relates to our current communication needs (i.e. packaging for our tees).  It was super productive.  In fact, the room I’m typing in now is covered with massive post-its notes full of ways to re-use materials and ship our tees.  Look out; over the next couple of weeks we’ll be fleshing out this project and I couldn’t be more impressed with the start.  For more pics head to our Flickr.
