Calling All Colors

Calling All Colors

Calling All Colors is a diversity awareness program for middle and high school students who  attend conferences, learn tools for increasing appreciation of diversity in their schools and creatively collaborate to implement action plans throughout the year.  A couple of students at Ambrose were able to participate in this year’s conference and/ or design some shirts for their chapters (Jovi at WO and Cam at Wavecrest).  Nice work you two!  For more info and a video featuring the ever-present Comic Sans in a variety of colors check this out.

Yup. It's the front.Yup. It's the back.

“We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race.” - Kofi AnnanYup, it's a dad joke. Seriously though, how cool is this concept? A message of different experiences united through common existence coming through on different colored tee's printed with the same message. Great job, Jovi!

Kabuki Mural

elevator-up-mural

For the last couple of weeks we’ve been working on the o-so-portable mural for our friends at Elevator Up.  I’m proud to announce that as of Saturday it’s been relocated to its new home.  Many thanks to Aaron for his patience and to the Collective for pouring in so much time and energy into the piece.  It has been an experiment in collaboration and we’ve learned a lot in the process.  One thing we’ll continue to flesh out is how to bring our individual talents to the collective table.  I’d like to hear your thoughts on what worked and what didn’t?  How can we c0-create more effectively?  What could we do better next time?

Road Trip Recap: UICA

Road Trip Recap: UICA

Slurpees, great conversation, a man dressed in metal and a trip to Grand Rapids’ UICA for Beautiful Losers made for one of the best days in recent months.  The film was a beautiful and honest look at the development of a group of art-outsiders turned international icons.  Totally inspiring.  The best part: conversation in the van on the way home was a full of dreams and tangible steps we can take to grow as artists and human beings.  I hope this is how all of our road trips turn out.

Love Your Library

Love Your Library

great-decisions

I love books.  New books.  Old books.  Books with pictures.  Books with words.  Books with words about pictures.  The downside of this literary affection has been a slimmer wallet and a thicker bookshelf…many of which idly gather dust while waiting for their semi-annual revisit.  As much as I love books, Jenna loves the library.  She says it confronts our culture’s (i.e. my own) rampant consumption and promotes communal life and ownership.  I agree.

This past month our library has hosted to a series of weekly luncheons focusing on energy conservation at home and as a community.  It featured a wide array of speakers (ranging from philosophers, pastors, professors, architects, policy makers + more) and was a much needed step towards building a stronger web of local resources and channels to effect change.  This February and March they look to continue the luncheon series with Great Decisions 09: A Series on World Affairs.

Seriously, where else can you get informed on problems like the global food supply, meet and talk with your neighbors who are making a difference, and walk away with a free lunch?  Herrick District Library, I salute you.

BEAUTIFUL LOSERS
Opens January 30 at the UICA
In the early 1990′s a loose-knit group of like-minded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.
Featuring Shepard Fairey, Margaret Kilgallen, Mike Mills, Barry McGee, Chris Johanson, Harmony Korine, Ed Templeton and a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture; Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.
