High School Debut 2009

High School Debut 2009

Kris at Debut 2009

Last week the Holland Area Arts Council and Holland Friends of Art hosted the opening reception for Debut 2009, a juried show of the finest student work in our region.  The quality and competition gets tougher every year, and we’re honored to have two crew members be selected to show their work.  Congratulations Mark & Kris!  And if that weren’t enough, Sarah Harris and Alex Fink, jurors of the show, selected Kris’ piece above for an honorable mention.  We think it needs a permanent home, don’t you?  Debut 2009 will continue to run at the HAAC until April 24.

Somebody’s Getting SWAG!

Somebody’s Getting SWAG!

Remember that time last week when people posted what stresses them out and we drew someone at random and sent them a t-shirt?  Well, that time is NOW!  And here’s where we post our winner’s stresses for all to see:

The letter ‘G’
Owls
The 15th century

Let’s hear it for Mike and his worries.  From the looks of it he’s got a rough life.  Here’s hoping a hand-printed tee eases that angst.

Get to know Hey Josh.  He slings advice, writes books and makes wicked videos.  He’s also shared the stage with Bill Cosby, appeared on MTV’s TRL, Comedy Central, NBC, FOX, TLC, and in the LA TIMES.  My vote: legendary.

Love Your Library

Love Your Library

I love books.  New books.  Old books.  Books with pictures.  Books with words.  Books with words about pictures.  The downside of this literary affection has been a slimmer wallet and a thicker bookshelf…many of which idly gather dust while waiting for their semi-annual revisit.  As much as I love books, Jenna loves the library.  She says it confronts our culture’s (i.e. my own) rampant consumption and promotes communal life and ownership.  I agree.

This past month our library has hosted to a series of weekly luncheons focusing on energy conservation at home and as a community.  It featured a wide array of speakers (ranging from philosophers, pastors, professors, architects, policy makers + more) and was a much needed step towards building a stronger web of local resources and channels to effect change.  This February and March they look to continue the luncheon series with Great Decisions 09: A Series on World Affairs.

Seriously, where else can you get informed on problems like the global food supply, meet and talk with your neighbors who are making a difference, and walk away with a free lunch?  Herrick District Library, I salute you.

The Mocha Club

The Mocha Club

In the last decade or so, there has been a lot of talk about saving Africa from poverty, war, disease, hunger, etc. All of this talk about us, the well-to-do Westerners, having obligations to help the poor Africans has created a superfluous amount of aid organizations. This abundance of organizations can be overwhelming for those who want to contribute as philanthropists, and can sometimes deter people from doing anything at all. A friend of mine told me about this site that is working throughout Africa with African organizations. Donating only $7 a month, the cost of just 2 Mochas, will…

- Feed 1 person for a month

- Educate 2 children for 1 school term

-Save 1 person’s life from Malaria

-Provide clean water for 7 Africans for 1 year.

For those who are interested in joining, I have created a team called “Ambrose for Education.” If you decide to donate and join the Mocha Club, you are welcome to join this team or create your own team.
