Consequential Conversations and Happiness

Consequential Conversations and Happiness

In a recent study Matthias Mehl, a psychologist at the University of Arizona, found that “people who spend more of their day having deep discussions and less time engaging in small talk seem to be happier.” Using a sample of 79 college students he recorded 30 second snippets of conversation every 12.5 minutes over the course of four days to create an auditory snapshot of their lives. The findings?  ”Together, the present findings demonstrate that the happy life is social rather than solitary, and conversationally deep rather than superficial.”

The High Line

The High Line

Something in me screams for joy when I see stuff like this. The repurposing of old and discarded things into new and desired things runs totally against the throw-away-culture we’ve been bombarded with over the last 20 years. The re-use of the High Line is beautiful. It was originally constructed in the 1930s, to lift dangerous freight trains (they killed a few folks) off Manhattan’s streets. The first section is now open as a public park. The project was spearheaded by Friends of the High Line.
